Do You Control Your Thoughts? Try Suddi Meditation

Metaphysical phenomena's are outside of the bounds of conventional science to be able to understand or measure.  Consciousness itself is a metaphysical experience.  Love is a metaphysical experience.  The way that the body works automatically all by its self, regulating millions of metabolic functions, is a metaphysical experience. 

MD's view point

But MDs turn a blind eye towards these phenomena and they write them all off as a fiction.  They will tell you that the body is able to get things done because of evolution but they won’t be able to precisely define for you the mechanism through which evolution works, nor will they be able to tell you how it all started in the first place.  They would have you believe that consciousness developed in an antediluvian swamp by a passing thundercloud that sent a lightning bolt into the amino acid soup and somehow that electrical charge started life… Consciousness itself to the MD is a function of biochemistry.  Consciousness does not exist outside of biochemistry.  Your biochemistry defines, describes and generates consciousness and when you die, it’s lights out, game over – consciousness goes away.  There is no such thing as God.  There is no such thing as a spiritual force.  This is what the MD believes.  This is what informs the therapeutics that they generate.  This is why, in the MD land, nothing gets cured.  


Today we are talking about the often misunderstood concept of meditation.  When you are involved in an authentic meditative discipline the intention is to separate yourself from the stream of thoughts moving through your mind and to sink deeper and deeper and deeper into the mind, ultimately transcending the mind.  When you transcend the mind, even just a little bit, remarkable things start to happen in your life. Why? Because you are touching the hem of the cloth of your true nature, which is that you are a spark of the divine.  Isn’t this what all religions teach?  By the way, in his annual encyclical a number of years ago, the Roman Catholic Pope advised Catholics all around the world to embrace the theory and the practice of yoga and meditation.  The nuts and bolts of the Pope’s message was that meditation, when properly applied, could make you a better Catholic.  Isn’t that interesting! 

So meditation is not an Eastern phenomenon.  It has been brought to the world stage by Eastern religions, but it’s like nutrition.  It doesn’t matter who discovers nutrition.  Everybody needs the right nutrition regardless of race, age, creed or color.  Well it’s the same with meditation.  If you are a Hindu or a Muslim or a Buddhist or a Born-Again Christian or a Catholic or a Baptist or a Protestant or a Mormon – it doesn’t matter.  When you learn to meditate, it will help you to become more grounded in your particular religious discipline.  

Suddi Technique

In any event, the process of meditation has many different aspects and there are many different meditation techniques.  I think that the best meditation technique to begin with is referred to as Suddhi.  It is what Zen meditation was based on.  It intends to help you to detach from the active turbulence on the top of the mind and to sink deeper and deeper in the mind – approaching closer and closer to true your true nature, which is the wellspring of all inspiration, all art, all intuition.  It’s a good place to hang out.  

Body-Mind Exercise

So let’s begin.  Here is an interesting exercise that I want everybody to do. I would like everybody right now to think of a tiger. Now I want you think about an iceberg.  Think about an iceberg – a giant iceberg floating in the ocean.  Got it? Okay, very good.  Now I’d like you to think about a field of daisies in full bloom.  Okay very good.  Now you can relax and think about whatever you want to. 

Here is the take-home message from that little exercise.  First you thought about the tiger, then you thought about the iceberg, then you thought about the daisies.  This proves that you are in control of your thoughts, because if you were not in control of your thoughts you would not have been able to think about those three different things.  So there is part of your mind which is able to actively generate and think thoughts.  Interestingly enough, there is also another part of your mind which receives the thoughts of everybody else in the world because we are in fact all connected.  This argues that you are separate and distinct from your thoughts.  You are in the control house.  Most people haven’t really thought about this.

What does this all means? You are not your thoughts.  You are separate and distinct from your thoughts.  The meditation practice that I am going to teach you intends to ground you in that part of your body, the mind, which is separate and distinct from your thoughts.  This is an interesting territory to explore, because even if you can get a tiny amount of facility here your life will be rewarded a great deal because this territory is the home of your authentic spiritual self.

This topic engenders a very interesting concept, because even though you are not your thoughts, you are only able to control your thoughts to a small degree.  The meditators of old have said...

It’s easier to stop the oceans and have control over the elements than it is to have control over your thoughts.

Let’s face it, in ordinary life, people are led around by their thoughts this way and that way all of the time.  It is as if our thoughts are controlling us and we have no say whatsoever in the matter.  The intention of this exercise and the intention of this kind of orientation is to just have you perhaps for the first time in your life, consider the notion that you are in fact separate and distinct from your thoughts and to teach you a method through which you can ground yourself in that part of your body-mind.

Step to Begin Meditation

  1. You want to practice this meditation technique when you are alone. 
  2. Somewhere where you don’t have to attend to anything and you won’t be interrupted for 15 minutes.
  3. Turn off the phone, turn off the radio, turn off the TV, turn off the lights.
  4. Sit down in a chair.  Put both feet flat on the ground. I want you to have your spine nice and straight.  I don’t want you to be leaning back in the chair and I don’t want you to be slouched over.  I want your feet to be firmly placed flat on the ground I want your spine to be nice and you erect in a nice comfortable seated position.
  5. Put your hands on your lap.  If you’re a woman, put your left hand over your right hand.  If you’re a man put your right hand over your left hand.  Rest them in your lap so that your thumbs are touching. 
  6. Then just relax and close your eyes and take three long, deep breaths.  Just in order to center yourself into this new special time that you’re going to take. 

Practise Meditation

This is a separate and distinct time just like breakfast is a unique time, lunch is a unique time and cocktail time is a unique time (a really unique time!). This unique time is meditation time.  So you take two or three deep breaths just to kind of get yourself into the groove of the moment.  Close your eyes and then I want you to direct your thoughts.  I want you to think about specific things.  Think about whatever you want to.  Think about a tiger, think about an iceberg.  Think about a field of daisies.  Think about whatever you want to think about, but change the subject rapidly.  And while you are thinking these thoughts and are moving from subject to subject, I want you to attempt to center yourself in the part of your body-mind that is directing the thoughts.  This is a lot like trying to tell somebody how to ride a bike.  It’s hard to do.  You can draw tangents around it, but you really just have to experience it for yourself to get it.  There is a part of your body-mind which is directing the thoughts you are actively thinking.  When you are being mindful of this process of thinking different thoughts, you can ground yourself and sit in that place inside your mind which is directing the thoughts. Even if you don’t know what the heck I am talking about at this point in the meditation, the instructions are to simply relax and observe your thoughts.  Just watch your thoughts. 

At this point in the meditation I want you to stop attempting to direct your thoughts.  I just want you to observe your thoughts.  When a thought pops up you recognize it and you let it go and then another thought will pop up and you recognize it and you let it go and then another thought pops up and you recognize it and let it go.  What normally happens when a thought pops into the mind is that we run with it.  So for instance – we will be thinking about what we are going to have for dinner.  Then we think about what’s in the fridge.  Do I have enough butter?  Do I have enough cheese?  Do I have enough tomatoes?  Do I have enough time to go to the grocery store?  Do I have enough money in my account to pay for all of the stuff that I need?  Will I get caught in rush-hour traffic?  The thoughts cascade and tumble over themselves and you run with them – you follow them through.  This is normally what we do. 

But this is not what we are doing in this meditation.  In this meditation, we are doing the exact opposite of this.  Instead of running with the thoughts and following the thoughts through, we are detaching from the thoughts.  It’s not easy to do but it's not hard to do either.  It’s like learning how to ride a bike, you’ll struggle with it and struggle with it and struggle with it - and then you get it.  When you get it, you got it forever.

So you ground yourself in the part of your body-mind which is directing your thoughts and then you just become the witness of your thoughts.  There you are, witnessing your thoughts.  A thought pops and up you let it go.  You don’t follow through. You let it go.  This is tricky, but you will get the hang of it sooner or later. This is all that you do in this particular type of meditation.  You ground yourself in that part of your body-mind which generates your thoughts and then you become the witness to your thoughts.  When thoughts pop up you let them go – over and over and over.  The more that you do this, you begin to become grounded in the simple fact that you are not your thoughts.  It’s a very difficult thing to describe. 

When you can sit in the part of your conscious awareness which is separate and distinct from your thoughts, you gain power and a certain sense of mastery which will have trickle-down effects on all aspects of your life.  The consistent practice of this meditation generates a greater and greater sense of control and peace.  You become more grounded in your true nature, the result of which is a relatively profound sense of peace, which then makes the rest of your life easier. Because when you hang out in the peace-zone more and more you get inspiration.  Your intuitive senses start to percolate to the surface of your life and things change.  This meditation technique brings you closer and closer to your true nature.  Your true nature, regardless of what your religious ideation is, is that you are a spark of the divine.  Even if you can just experience a little teeny weenie piece of that, then it would be reasonable to assume that that experience would have a dramatic impact on the rest of your life.  

Run With It Baby!

So practice this meditation technique.  It’s called a practice for a reason.  Some days it will be easy breezy lemon squeezy, some days you will be fighting it.  Some days you will fall right into it.  Practice does in fact make perfect.  The recommendation here is to start out by doing this for 15 minutes once a day.  The more that you get into it you can go to 15 minutes twice a day and then 20 minutes twice a day - and then just run with it baby, run with it - all the way into the land of Self-realization.  And that beats a poke in the eye with a sharp stick…
